- Personal Laptops: Staff and students are prohibited from connecting personal laptops to wired network ports.
- Wireless Connectivity: Staff and students may use wireless connectivity for their laptops and mobile devices, provided they adhere to the following:

- Anti-Virus Software: Laptops must have up-to-date anti-virus software installed.
- Software Updates: Ensure that the latest security patches and service packs are applied to prevent vulnerabilities.
3. Configuration Restrictions:
- IP Addressing: Do not share IP addresses with other devices or use static IP addresses.
- Network Services:
- Do not configure or install services such as DHCP servers, firewalls, routers, WINS servers, mail/SMTP servers, DNS or proxy servers, remote modem dial-in access, wireless LAN access, video/audio streaming services, online game servers, web hosting, FTP servers, or peer-to-peer file sharing services.
4. Prohibited Activities:
- Abusive Actions: Avoid engaging in activities that could harm other computers within the network, including but not limited to:
- Port scanning
- Sending spam emails
- Installing or connecting to Trojan horse software
5. Tampering and Unauthorized Changes:
- Network Outlets:
- Do not relocate network outlets using extension cables.
- Do not extend or add network outlets using hubs, switches, routers, NAT, or wireless base stations.
6. Network Monitoring and Inspection:
- The Centre for IT Department reserves the right to:
- Perform background scans for viruses, intrusion attempts, and system vulnerabilities.
- Inspect files on computers connected to the network to ensure compliance with AOU's policies and legal regulations.
